Katarina Witt first began to skate when she was five years old. The talent she displayed soon became apparent, and she gained entry to a private school that caters for children with a talent for sport in Karl-Marx-Stadt. The school where she was enrolled she got to know her coach Jutta Muler. Witt made her breakthrough year in 1982 after she finished second at the World Championships held in Copenhagen. In the years since, Witt's elegance and grace have caught all the attention of people. Olympic victory at the 1984 Sarajevo Winter Games, Katarina Witt came through a closely fought contest to win the women's figure skating gold medal. Then, four years after her win, she managed to win an even more intense race. Free skaters lost however, she took home the gold medal for her mandatory figures and her short programme. Witt is the only female figure skater who has won the same event twice in the same year since Sonja Heine. Hall of Fame Witt competed at Lillehammer Winter Games in 1994 after a successful career acting. While she was not able to take home a medal, the young woman impressed her spectators despite finishing seventh. Witt's admission into the World Figure Skating Hall of Fame occurred in the year 1995.
